I can only speak for my son and those who share a class with them. Every year, they are "forced" to read a teacher-selected book, but the other books read for school are chosen by them individually or as a group from a list. Their outside reading is a different matter. One factor that directly impacts reading for enjoyment that is not often discussed is housing security. Millions of teens in the US do not have safe, stable housing which impacts reading and access to books. Nearly every teen in my town (around 40k population) has a library card and many are active with library events but many complain about "having nothing to read" because the themes they want to read are not available.
